About Plant

Scientific Name: Spinacia oleracea, Basella alba

Common Name: Spinach, Malabar Spinach
Category: Vegetable, Medicinal Plant
-------

Figure 1: Spinach Plant

Today I hope to explain you how to grow spinach at home. We can grow them in two ways and, they are by seeds and by matured stems. First of all I hope to describe spinach cultivation using matured seeds.

Figure 2: Spinach Seeds

When we are choosing seeds we have to avoid greenish seeds. Because less probability of growing due to less maturity of seed. Now we look how to create our spinach growing media in suitable container.

Figure 3: Growing Media Arrangement

When we are arranging growing soil composite for spinach cultivation, we can use compost, coco-peat and thin soil. It can be mixed as following ratio,

Compost: 2

Coco-Peat: 2

Thin Soil: 1

After getting that ratio, we can mount them into suitable container by getting 2/3 depth of container or pot. Next, we must add water and we have to mix this composite at least 10 minute to get better performance like shown Figure 3. After mixing we have to wait few minutes until water will disappearing on container. Now we have to keep our removed spinach seeds in sunny area about two hours to get its pigment drying to get quick growing performance.

Figure 4: Seed Placement in Growing Media

Now we can place dried seeds in growing media by crating suitable holes using your fingers. After placement of seeds, it is compulsory to close each seed mounted holes. In first five days we can see little spinach plants like below.

Figure 5: Five Days Later

After 12 days, we can we can see yellowish green colour on little spinach leaf. In this moment it is compulsory to add nitrogen based fertilizer to overcome it. In organic farming we can use new cow-dung before them drying.

Figure 6: Cow-Dung Adding Process

I think now you have a question, why wet cow dung was added instead dry cow dung. Dry cow dung is good, but in my personal experience I have seen a lot of leaf growing performance with newest wet cow dung. Cow dung is not harmful to spinach hence, we can add lot of cow dung repeat on five days to five days.

Figure 7: One Month Later

After one month spinach plant starts to grow as a vine. In this situation it is compulsory to arrange suitable frame or stand complex to grow spinach vine. 3 month later you can see huge spinach vine on your attached stand or frame complex. So, you can cut your spinach harvest as you wish. Now we look how to grow spinach stem to get a new plant. Before planting we need to choose matured spinach stems at least 3 inch length.

Figure 8: Matured Spinach Stem

You can use any types of ground soil to grow these stems. But it is use if are using thin ground soil or organic compost mixed soil mix.

Figure 9: Spinach Stem Planting Process

In planting process of these stems, it is compulsory to grounding at least four centimetres of stem to get better rooting. After five days you can see, the stem has little leaf.

Figure 10: Five Days Later

Now we can see our succeed mission and, in this situation it is not suitable sunny area. Among first five days it is not suitable to add fertilizer. First 10 days later you can apply wet cow dung keeping at least 1 centimetre distance around each stem.

Figure 11: Twelve  Days Later

You can repeat applying more and more novel cow dung to grown stem area by keeping above described distance to get huge leaf. After one month you can see highly grown spinach leaf on each stem.

Figure 12: Thirty Days Later

After 30 days, we can see the leaf is starting to launch spinach vine. In this time you can add suitable stand or frame complex to aid for spinach vine growth. In this time optimum sunlight is needed to get better growth of spinach vine. I think now you have an other question, and it is how to prevent spinach plants from diseases. Specially we can see insect damages on spinach plants.

Figure 13: Some Diseases on Spinach Leaves

And also some of the virus effects may happen by transmission of the insect. Therefore it is compulsory to launch insect repulsion process. We can do it using tobacco extraction. The extraction solution can be taken by boiling 10 grams of tobacco with 1 grams of black pepper powder. And it should be boil at least 15 minutes to get the best performance.

Figure 14: Spraying Process of Tobacco Extraction

Next,it is compulsory to launch filtering process to remove unwanted particles from extraction. Then you can spray that extraction on each spinach leaf area. This extraction can be used to overcome even fungi diseases. I think now you will be able grow spinach in your home garden correctly.
